The artist Nick Jeffrey stayed on the island of Eilean Shona, in the Western Hebrides of Scotland, for four months in the summer of 2009. During his stay Nick shot a series of films in Super 8, which now serves as an extraordinary document of the artist’s relationship with the island, and a unique insight into the ideal of the landscape. The film captured the abstract beauty of the island, the colours, textures and patterns of its scenery.

Collected in this publication are a series of stills from that film, printed on a variety of recycled paper stocks and weights. These are presented in a sleeve containing texts by Robert Devereux and Benjamin Eastham. Shards itself is the first in an ongoing series under the same title of photographs rendered as sublime fragments of films created by the artist. The presentation boxes are hand crafted, and the cover of each features a unique work rendered directly onto the material by the artist using pyrography.
